Newland Residence Hall
This image shows the southern (rear) entrance to Newland Residence Hall, built 1939, at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in the 1970s. The building was built on the sight of the original Newland Hall, built 1908, and housed 132 students. It started as a men's dormitory, but became co-educational in 1971. A new Newland Hall was built on the sight in 1996.

One of two portraits of Robert Doughton held by the Committee on Ways and Means, this hand-painted photograph is not considered his primary chairman portrait. This media, as well as the Underwood and Underwood photography firm, was also chosen by the committee for Joseph Fordney’s portrait.

Doughton Residence Hall
This image shows the southern side of Doughton Hall, built in 1963, at Appalachian State University (1967-current). Doughton Hall was originally a women's dormitory that housed 300 students on seven floors. It is now a co-educational dormitory and is part of the Eastridge Community of Residence Halls. In the background is White Hall, another women's dormitory, built 1966.
